3 things to do before giving birth

The last couple of weeks are often quite stressful and hectic. You will probably be trying to get everything on your to-do list checked off. And although there’s a wealth of information on things to buy for the nursery there’s not much said on how to prepare for breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is natural but it doesn’t always come naturally. Here’s 3 simple things you can do to ensure a great start, the moment you have your baby in your arms.

  1. Take a breastfeeding class. It will help you navigate the basics with a little more confidence and provide a lens for you to weed out bad advice.
  2. Find a lactation consultant before you need it! Book a quick meeting before your baby arrives, introduce yourself. You won’t regret it! You will have someone to double check your concerns and also to help you diagnose your problems.
  3. Make sure everyone knows you want to breastfeed. Prepare a birth plan, talk to your doctor/midwife and your partner.

These steps may seem obvious and simple but they are often forgotten among things. Together they will make sure you have the proper support and knowledge you will need to have a strong start.
