How to support breastfeeding mom

You may be wondering how you can share the load or support a breastfeeding mom. Breastfeeding is hard. It requires a village and a great team. So your role is crucial.

In the early days after birth she may only be managing to eat, sleep and nurse the baby.

There’s a lot you can do to support her.

Studies show that mothers who get support are less likely to perceive a low milk supply. And it’s not rocket science there are a lot of practical ways that you could do to support. You could simply make sure she has water and a snack available while breastfeeding or to refrain from suggesting formula at the first sign of difficulty.

Here’s few things that could help you understand what she’s going thru:

  1. For most babies feeding is instinctive but it takes a lot of practice to get it right in the beginning.
  2. Breastfeeding is controlled by a number of hormones, she is on a constant roller coaster of emotions.
  3. Breastfeeding isn’t always quick. Each feed can last anywhere from 10 minutes to about an hour. Most newborns feed at least 8-12 times a day.

Here’s a couple of things that could help you help her:

  1. Learn how to cook

No one is expecting you to be top chef but you should definitely be able to whip couple of healthy soups or simple dishes. So think of it this way, it’s a life skill that you will most surely benefit in the long run.

  1. Give her a massage

She is probably constantly holding a baby in her arms and she has aches all over her body. Why not take a class and learn how to give her a proper massage.

  1. Walk the baby

Take the baby on quick walks in between feeds. Wearing your little one with a ring sling or a simple wrap will help him settle down easier.

  1. Talk to her

Even though it seems like she’s home and not doing much all day, she’s going through a lot. For starters, she’s trying to keep a tiny human being alive and it almost always feels like it’s all on her shoulders. It’s not your everyday job. So ask her, how she’s feeling and what she wants…What she misses the most or what she needs right this minute.. You’ll be surprised.

Finally, one thing you will not need, contrary to all the advice!
