3 simple signs of a good latch

Finding a good latch isn’t an exact science. But there are various methods to ensure the baby is in a comfortable position to feed effectively.

Firstly, before we get into nitty gritty, rest assured. If your baby is gaining weight well and if you’re not hurting, you probably have a good latch.

One of the easiest way to ensure a good latch is to try the reclining or biological nurturing position. This position will trigger your baby’s natural feeding reflexes and help him to take a good mouthful of breast.

Whatever the position you prefer, you can make sure your baby is feeding effectively by checking these 3 signs:

  1. His nose should almost touch your breast
  2. His mouth should be wide open and lips flanged
  3. He should look like he is biting not sucking and his ears should be wiggling!

If the latch is uncomfortable or painful, gently place your finger in the baby’s mouth, between his gums, to detach him and try again.

Here’s a selection of breastfeeding videos that show helpful breastfeeding positions, the principles of a good latch, how to tell if a baby is drinking plenty of breast milk and more.
